I'll go first since I'm the first and only member here, right now. Hello everyone, *waves to invisible crowd* As I said in the welcome thread, my online avatar and favorite name ever that I chose for myself is K'Sennia Visitor. I started publishing in Aug of 2013. I am not successful at all, by pretty much anyone's standards. But that's because I am incredibly lazy and do everything the wrong way. But I keep trying. At the moment I am on a sort of educational sabbatical while I try and learn how the world works to help me in crafting my TUOK universe. TUOK is an all inclusive universe filled with characters of all colors, body types, sexual orientations, romantic orientations, gender identities, and life experiences. I created it back in 2011, but back then I was still pretty racist and just unaware of the world around me. I had just come out of a lifetime of religious extremist indoctrination and discovered I was a lesbian. So almost everyone in my story was a white cis-sexual lesbian. Which is cool. But as I grew and matured, I knew I could do better. Or at least that is what I am aspiring to do.

Hey, I'm the second member! How'd that happen? I've been indie publishing since early 2011, and I'm not where I thought I'd be this far into it. But, I've had some life rolls, as DWS calls them, and some major setbacks. Things are starting to look up, though. I hope this forum can be a good place to share and learn, especially if the Looky-Lous sign up. You will be assimilated!

You've been at this since the golden days of 2011, wow! I wasn't even aware of kindle in 2011, I hope you find this place helpful and that others follow your lead. What genres are you in?

Greetings and salutations. I'm Carl (obviously). I write a mix of things but my main gig is "masculine fiction" (new pulp) and science fiction. Oddly enough, I'm working on a western at the moment. I really want to tough this one out, but the research is a killer! My hero's setting up camp in the Wyoming desert and he looks across the land and sees, well, he sees desert, dotted with those scrubby plants you always see in westerns - what are those damned plants called?! See what I mean? I live nowhere near an American desert and I know almost nothing about horses, other than the fact that they have four legs and you can ride one. . Anyway, glad to be here!

Cactus or tumbleweeds, most likely. The Cacti are the thorny ones. I don't live in a desert but I've driven through Nevada on my way to Arizona to visit my grandparents. Haven't been to Wyoming. Does Google Earth have some good Wyoming desert pics? Or do they just do places where people live? Feel free to start a westerns thread if you want. You can share what you find, and maybe other western writers will show up. We can dream. Also hiiiii Carl. Welcome to the boards. We're becoming a little bit less like a ghost town with every new member.

Carl, it's trees, bushes, and cactus. I think they have mesquite in Wyoming. I lived in Arizona for a couple of years, and that's what we had.
As for me, the main pen name writes SF and horror, the other one writes UF and the "lady" stuff, like romance and women's fiction, and the Name That Shall Not Be Shared writes the stuff with sex in it. That one is going to retire soon, I hate writing sex scenes. My own name will be used for nonfiction, when that finally gets done. There's a possibility of another pen name for more "manly" works, like action adventure and Westerns. I have an idea to do some books based around a live action amusement park think my father and some friends did when I was a kid.

I'm MP McDonald and that's what I write under. I'm Mary McDonald on kboards, I think. lol I've been a member there for 8 years but don't post nearly as often as I used to.
Anyway, I've been publishing since 2010, but I'm a slow writer and only have 11 novels. 7 of them are in one universe (5 book series, then 2 book spinoff) and are thrillers with a supernatural element. Three are post-apoc, no zombies, pandemic type of apocalypse. And one is a romantic suspense.

I was so excited to see member number 4! 11 novels is still a lot compared to the 0 number of novels I've written. Well, I do have one story that's around 20 or 30,000 words. I haven't looked at it in a while. And then I've got one that I just unpublished that was 19,000. Anywho, 11 novels compared to two novellas is still impressive. I actually love apocalypse stuff but zombies bore me and I don't really get all that excited about pandemics, either. I need to add you to my list for when I have book money again! One of the many serieses I want to write would end in an apocalypse, and then the follow up would be post apoc. There's this series of YA books called The Seven Sleepers that got me into the genre. And I do occasionally enjoy a good romantic suspense, as well. Thrillers and anything supernatural is good, too. (nods head) I hope you'll post more over here, but no worries if you feel more comfy lurking. I lurk more than post at Kboards, too. But here I have more posts than anyone. *teeheehee*

Hi! I'm Marie, and saw this board mentioned on KBoards.
I wear a couple of hats; I'm a first-time author and also a copyeditor. I'm working on a book aimed at hearing-impaired children and their parents, but also with a more general appeal to kids with normal hearing. My source material is our 7-year-old grandson, who was diagnosed at age 4 with profound hearing loss and now is doing quite well with cochlear implants. His mom, my daughter, is an audiologist (ironically) and is a tremendous resource. There isn't much out there on the subject of deaf children, and I hope to fill a need and educate readers about the journey from diagnosis to restoration of hearing in a child-friendly narrative.
I can tell you this... this writing business is far harder than editing!!!

I can tell you this... this writing business is far harder than editing!!! Welcome Marie! *waves in a friendly manner* Wow! Your book sounds really interesting, and it sounds like it fills a need. A relative of a relative's daughter was discovered to have profound hearling loss when she was 4, as well, and she also go cochlear implants. She's around 16 or 17 now, but I bet she would have loved a book about a kid like her when she was little. As I'm sure all of the kids with similar experiences would. Education is one of my favorite things! I also agree that writing is hard, but I find editing much harder. It's great that there are folks like you out there that don't mind it, or maybe even enjoy it. You and anyone else is welcome to start a services thread, too. We have 9 people now, so not much of an audience, but this morning we had 3. So we're growing and who knows how much larger we'll grow over time?

I may well do that (start a services thread.) I always hesitate to mention the editing part of things, but every author needs an editor! I do, truly, enjoy it.
Now back to coming up with dialogue that would be believable coming from a four-year-old! NOT easy, even as much as I've been around little ones.
Thanks for starting this board!

And you're right, writing dialogue for kids is hard. If you know any 4-year-olds, you could try recording them. Talk to them, and ask leading questions about what you want your story character to say, and then see how the kid you know says it.

Hi! I'm Maow Maow. Think of the sound a hungry cat makes, and then the reply a cat owner makes. It sounds like something in between the two.
I write books. I've done freelance writing and editing for over a decade, and I've been self-published since 2012.

Hi all. Just joined today. I'm Kathy. I've been writing forever, but I started self publishing in 2014. I read & write middle grade fantasy. I'm an introverted, married mom of two who writes better than I talk, has a love for books that borders on obsession, addiction to chocolate, coffee and cheese and a nasty streak of procrastination (which involves spending to much time surfing the net) that I'd like to kick to the curb. It's nice to meet all of you. Looking forward to watching this community grow.

(nods head) We could always start a thread on that and ways to break the habit. Although reading it might count as procrastination.

Hi ligil, pleased to meet you! *Fist bump for another 13'er* Feel free to start any threads you want or to comment on any other threads. You're in the main forum, right now, and there are two others just for members. The Name and Shame board for exposing scammers and helping other authors avoid being scammed. And one for erotica authors. No activity in them yet, which is fine, but they're there if you wished to use them.

I love SFF. And it's a really hard genre to write if you aren't at least a little odd. Say, what's the typical sentence for a conviction of weirdness? Dolla, dolla, dolla bills?

Hi everyone! I'm also here via KBoards. As a copy editor/proofreader, I fall under the category of "author services," but I'm also just a big fan of indie authors, and love to keep up with what is new and exciting in the world of self-publishing. You all seem like a fun bunch, so I'm excited to participate in the discussions!

Hello, you might know me from KBoards. So glad to find another writers' forum for indies and I hope the mods here don't reach for the smelling salts at the first sign of a disagreement.
Anyway, I write mostly historical fiction. I am thinking of starting a new pen name soon for romantic thrillers in the shape of Minette Walters or Mary Higgins Clark. Still considering.
