As a freelance copy editor, proofreader, and researcher, I provide quality work within a collaborative environment.
I edit the words, not the writer.
I specialize in copy editing fiction and non-fiction books for independent authors. I especially enjoy editing historical and speculative fiction, including romance and YA novels, but I also love to learn about real-world people and subjects via biographies, memoirs, and history books.
I am a member of Editors Canada (formerly the Editors' Association of Canada, or EAC) and filled the role of communications chair at the Toronto branch from 2014-2016. As the communications chair, I was also the assistant editor for the Toronto branch's blog, BoldFace.
I live in Toronto, Canada with my husband and our adorable black cat, Desi.
Free sample edit:
I am happy to provide a free sample edit of up to 5 pages from your manuscript. This allows you to see the quality of my work up front, and I can get a more accurate idea of the type of editing your project would benefit from the most.
I will also provide you with a quote for the full cost of the project, and keep you updated on my progress throughout the editing process so there are no unpleasant surprise costs at the end.
I understand that handing over your manuscript to an editor can be a scary prospect, but it's also very exciting! You've put many hours of hard work into your manuscript, and I consider it a privilege to be entrusted with helping you take it one step closer to publication.
Services:
Copy Editing - Editing for grammar, spelling, punctuation and other mechanics of style. I'll make sure you're using the correct "its/it's" and catch any sneaky comma splices. Depending on the project, this may also include clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon, and other non-mechanical line-by-line editing. I will also do a basic fact check.
Proofreading - Editing for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. The manuscript has already been copy edited, so this is just one last pass to make sure no typos have been missed or unintentionally introduced before being published.
Research/Fact-Checking - If you're working on a historical fiction or non-fiction manuscript, and you'd like some help with research or fact-checking, I can do the heavy lifting for you—especially when it comes to all of those library books! I will collect reputable sources and compile a comprehensive research report for you, complete with a bibliography so you can reference everything accurately.
You can find more information about my services, including testimonials from previous clients, on my website: www.hkeditor.com
Feel free to email me with any questions or to request a free sample edit: heather@hkeditor.com
Whatever the scope of your project, I look forward to helping you accomplish your editorial goals!
