I'm not really a newbie, but I didn't know very much about ISBNs, so I learned a few things from this d2d article. In case, you find ISBNs confusing and you have questions about whether you need one or not, you should read this:

It was written around 4 years ago, but as far as I know the only outdated portion is the mention of CreateSpace.
