I'm done with Kboards. I won't even lurk there anymore. I had a friend who lurked their for years to post for the first time daring to dispute the accuracy of the RWA's so-called poll where they name the percentage of readers. That poll is a mess and completely inaccurate because the RWA lives in a bubble. It does not do surveys on indies or any of our readers, no surveys for LGBT or minority readers and they only poll trade pubs and authors in their organization yet those dummies on Kboards act like that poll is the bible of romance reading, please. Even people in trade publishing know that poll and the RWA for that matter is a joke. So of course you had some posters to come out with their "know-it-all-attitude." Needless to say, this is why so many folks have left that pathetic excuse of a forum and why me and others spent years lurking instead of posting. We saw how over time, the know-it-alls who have actually accomplished doo-da act like the new age gatekeepers. What made Kboards so special back in the day was it was the house of rebels. Remember those days? Kboards was where outsiders and people who didn't wish to conform to the rules of the writing industry, came to gather. That's what Writers Cafe was built on. It was a place for INDIES who didn't live by the conventional ways of the trade world. I thought being an indie meant we don't let industry big dogs and industry entities rule our thinking. But suddenly, Kboards is the new Absolute Write. Nothing over there but snobbish elitists who piss on anyone whose opinion is different than theirs. It's ridiculous when you got folks over there who are defending places like the RWA, a place that pissed on indies for years, against others who have a different point of view about the place. But that right there shows WHY Kboards is a mess now. It's not at all what it used to be. Even the foundation it was built on is no longer accurate. It's just like AW now with a few nobodies who wanna feel important, shouting down others. The nice folks over there get eaten alive if they don't fall into the groupthink that's taken over. Yeah but this was once the place for INDIES? The place where INDIES celebrated being different and making their own rules now we got people there who worship the RWA? ? A place who despised indies so much that they couldn't even join up until a few years ago? A place that is known for treating marginalized groups like crap? Really, this is what Kboards has become? Those defending the RWA look like idiots when the RWA wouldn't spit on them if they were on fire. You can't blame this on VyderScope, it's the people on the forum. Now I HOPE that Kboards disappears because now it's dissolved into something Harvey would be quite ashamed of. No more lurking there for me.

You made me look at Kboards because I don't know what RWA is really. I don't write romance. Couldn't find the thread either.
But I did see Hugh's sci fi competition thread. Only 8 replies and 250 views. I do write sci fi, so I took a look. Usuals rubbish. Wandered off bored.

It was the thread someone posted about a Kindle Author Making $100k or something and the thread devolved in a lot of different topics. At first they all jumped on Crystal about her comments concerning men trying to take over romance or whatever then someone posted the RWA poll and a few, including my friend posted about the inaccuracy. But the thread should've been locked anyway since it didn't even stay on topic. Yeah, it is boring and empty. I'm done lurking there, that's for sure. I just popped in occasionally anyway but nothing's going on there.

Crystal was the one that started the shit show in that thread. She definitely deserved to be called out. It’s quite entertaining over at Kboards at the moment. Hurry over before Becca puts a stop to it!

I did read what Crystal said about men not posing as women in romance...or at least that's what I thought she was saying.
I thought she might have been referring to the guy who wrote romance under a female pen name. He also posted on FB under his pen name and asked female readers about their sexual fantasies. That was a few years ago and he was on kboards saying he didn't see anything wrong with it. To be fair, he was creepy.
But I stopped reading the thread. It wasn't that interesting.

I knew nothing about Chance Carter until he was banned by Amazon. I guess the women at least knew he was a dude. The other guy was a right freak show. He absolutely couldn't see why posing as a female author and talking to women online about their sex lives was nasty. I'm pretty sure he was chased off kboards and never knowingly seen again. And I think that happened just before the great purge of romance authors.

Are we talking about this thread? www.kboards.com/threads/how-one-author-earns-100k-year-using-kindle-unlimited.334613/ Wow! That thread was a clusterfuck, all right. Your friend's posts were the one bright part of it. I'm glad Becca didn't prune them. I agree that the RWA poll is super inaccurate and offensive, and good on her for speaking up and telling it like it is. You're never going to find accurate information from a trad publishing organization, especially, not one as problematic as the RWA. We used to have Indie polls, back in the day, but there doesn't seem to be much info available anymore that you don't have to pay for.

On another note I see they ran off one of the nicest people that were still left on the board, NikOK. Can't blame him for leaving. He was way too kind and grown up for that place. Kboards has really gone to hell. They act worse than Absolute Write now. Is that their goal? Running off everyone who comes there? Most people don't want to go to a place with a bunch of bitching, snapping and, snarkiness. It's like they're too busy trying to one-up each other and prove how big their d*cks are when they are supposed to be a community and uplifting one another. At least that used to be the purpose of Kboards. Can't they see the actions of those left is why the board is so pathetic these days? Nothing but a bunch of meanies and losers who think they are better than everyone else. Like that poster that said they needed proof about the RWA. I believe it was Paranormal Kitty, with her dumb ass. If she took the time to read what my friend was actually saying and not just thinking of snarky, elitist comebacks, she'd know this was true. Hasn't she been paying attention to the RWA's history? People have been talking about the inaccuracy of those posts for years and she looks like a fool taking up for a place that wouldn't have let her in the door a few years ago. That's what got me when I saw the thread. People taking up for the RWA. INDIES taking up for the RWA of all people? I tell you, I won't be shocked if this place is gone by next year.

Kboards should be unmoderated. It’s so much more entertaining that way! Lord knows they need all the help they can get to get that place jumping. It's like a graveyard unless they are having an argument.

NikOK was so sweet. He was a newbie, sure, but he always listened to both sides, and was always so positive and cheerful.
Becca obviously deleted some posts before I got there, but WindyCity and friends have shown up and are now shitting on Rosalind. I don't know what she ever did to them. I guess they're jealous?

As someone who has no investment in either side, it's just another troll thread with all sides acting out. And Rosalind could be very high handed and she was quite rude to a lot of people in her time. Of course, that's no reason to be as rude as windycity is being, but trolls gonna troll, right? And they're all trolling on that thread now. Providing you're not invested in either side, it's at least slightly more amusing this way.
Kboards was only ever 'good' for the inner circle. Far more people found it unfriendly than not. Newcomers weren't welcome, nor was anyone who didn't curry favor or tout the party line. Maybe it was better when the guy who started it was around, but by the time I joined it was already a bit of a mean girl playground and the mod style didn't help.

The selective modding at Kboards is a major issue. A lot of the problematic stuff that’s happening there wouldn’t be happening if that place had proper mods.

The selective modding at Kboards is a major issue. A lot of the problematic stuff that’s happening there wouldn’t be happening if that place had proper mods. Yep. I deleted every post I ever made and blanked out my account. The modding always was bad (being able to change people's posts - I mean, WTF). If the mods ever touched my posts I would delete them, not that they ever did. But when Becca became the last standing mod that was the end of kboards for me. Kboards' mods already had too much power and it should NEVER be in the hands of someone like Becca. At least the original mods had Harvey's backing, although that excuse for wielding power became wafer thin seeing as he's been dead for years. But there is ZERO excuse to give that kind of power to Becca. She's not mature or respected enough to have it. The buyer, VS, may have driven a lot of posters away and the board could have renewed itself, but leaving Becca as the last standing over powered mod is the killing blow. I expect kboards will deteriorate and dwindle until there's nothing left other than handful of loud, persistent, and pointless posters. As for being a good source of information, you'd have to know less than zero about this business to believe that. 😂

Becca mods as if she doesn't give a shit which makes me wonder why she continues. Maybe she can't let of the teeny, tiny ounce of power she has. You'd be surprised how seriously these Internet mods take their positions. They act like they are elected officials or something. No, sweetie. You're just a nobody modding a loser message board for free.
Also, I heard rumors that the other mods couldn't stand her. Who knows but they both cut out of there and I don't blame them. Not that they were great at the modding either. Part of the reason Kboards is the useless dump it is now is because of the mods controlling everything and not being fair with their actions. They always showed favoritism and with the way they treated Rebecca Hamilton, it made me wonder if she was paying them! They let the so-called big names or their favorite posters (who probably kissed their asses behind the scenes) do anything they want while banning others at the drop of a hat. I lost respect for the mods on TWO occasions. One, when they sat up there and let Rebecca Hamilton continue to hock her services while knowing damn well she was a scammer. She'd scammed folks left and right yet when others tried to call her out or warn people, the mods shut that down immediately. It was ridiculous how they jumped through hoops for Rebecca and yes I honestly think she was paying someone at Kboards. But that was when I lost the most respect for the board because no other board or group would let a known scammer keep advertising. On the flip side, they treated Christina Gardner (the one who filed that suit and had the thread on Kboards) like horse crap. They kept pruning posts in her thread, kept banning people who shared opinions, Stevie Wonder could see the bias going on toward Rebecca Hamilton that board. Here Christina was, the victim, and she was being treated like the criminal by Ann, Betsy, and Becca. They showed her NO sympathy. Let's be real, they didn't want her posting about the lawsuit in the first place. It was obvious, then tried to do everything they could to strip it of the important details. Sickening.
The other is how they treated erotica and romance authors. When I saw the mods, as three WOMEN, not stand up for the erotica or steamy romance writers when Kboards threw the hammer down on them. They tried to blame it on Google but that's a lie. If it was Google having an issue with erotica or steamy covers in sigs then how come it's no issue anywhere else? It's not a problem on Goodreads. Not a problem on the social media sites. All of these sites can be found on Google. But the mods claimed that erotica or steamy authors could no longer post their book covers on the site because it was considered "porn" and against Google's rules. I was shaking my head then.
THAT'S when things started changing. Way back then because all those erotica and romance authors left. Erotica authors felt picked on and some romance authors left in protest and support of them. Many were saying it wasn't fair that some could show their covers and others not and it really hurt erotica authors when they could no longer list their books because there were tons of readers in there and many looked at their sigs. Those signatures were a form of advertisement. How could it be fine for years then all of a sudden Google had an issue? The mods were lying through their teeth. Maybe Harvey or someone didn't want it but it's a lie that it was because of Google. Also, I remember all those erotica covers and none were explicit. They looked just like romance. It's not like they were stuffing the board with pornographic pics. I'd understand it then.
But yeah, many were angry at the mods especially them being women because erotica is a genre women mainly write and so there was a sexist strain to it as well many felt. I remember when this first happened. It was a LONG, nasty thread where the erotica authors and romance authors had it out with other authors about the fairness of that. Authors called out the mods and people even started talking about Christianity and all this. It was a mess. That was the first big exodus. It wasn't the VyderScope. It was when they banned erotica authors from advertising. Mostly all of them left and went to Facebook and Dirty Discord. That was a huge chunk of Kboards members.
So the disintegrating of Kboards started way back then. At the time I didn't realize it would have such an effect, but it did because these erotica and romance authors warned others against going to Kboards, and soon most romance or erotica authors wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole. Add to that how pissed many in the indie community was that Kboards were RH enablers. Yeah, KBoards got dragged all on Facebook and other sites for how they kissed Rebecca's ass but treated Christina like dirt. None of those people wanted anything to do with this place so Kboards soon became a place indie authors stayed away from. People keep saying Kboards was so popular but they forget that it was a TINY percentage of indies on that board. Kboards was not as popular as they thought it was. Many indies never heard of Kboards. Most were on social media sites back then. Kboards was mainly popular because they had some big names posting there. That's it. Other than that, it wasn't any better than the FB groups. And many liked Kboards because it was known for being messy and drama-filled and they loved watching the threads erupt. There was more drama there after a while than knowledge.
But yeah, Kboards is dead now all because of favoritism, messy mods, and unneeded drama. So Kboards deserves to die on that hill they are on.
And for those over there still trying to keep the fire burning by still pretending Kboards is relative are either just pathetic or need to get a clue. They know damn well that place is a sad excuse for a community now. If it even was one.

The whole RH and subsequent saga escaped me. I wasn't hooked into the romance marketing scene, so I didn't know anything about her. Should kboards have hosted the b*tch fight that went on about that? Probably not. But they hosted David G setting the dogs after some poor newbie author who naively used a dodgy marketing service. Amazon suspended, then reinstated the guy because it was obvious he didn't know what the hell he'd gotten involved in. But David G should not have set the dogs after him like that, and kboards shouldn't have hosted the attack.
And I wasn't there for the erotica author thing, in fact, I didn't know what's what happened. I heard there was a problem, but no one ever explained it so succinctly. It's not my genre, so I don't know anyone in the circuit. But Amazon have also repeatedly attacked erotica authors over the years. From what I read, Amazon were very happy to use erotica content to attract a reader base until they got enough critical mass, then they stomped all over it. By then, of course, people were paying their bills writing erotica, and almost overnight they became piranhas. I could understand why erotica authors felt used, abandoned, and that no one cared.

Erotica authors have always been used to build things, then thrown away and discarded when the thing they built got popular. I've read some really good takes by people in the know that go into the history, but I can't remember any specifics. I'm just left with a belief that it's a familiar pattern.
I am actually feeling a little uncomfortable about some of the vitriol being thrown toward Becca. I think she's a good person, who is doing her best to moderate what used to be her home online for many years. I didn't like a lot of the mod decisions, and sometimes in my head I'd mutter "fuck you" when posts were pruned or deleted. But I also know that when you're a moderator of a forum you get inundated with reports from users who act like Kindergarteners coming to tattle on others, and demanding you punish the posters they disagree with.
And as a moderator of a busy board, you have to make unpopular decisions sometimes. Did Betsy, Ann, and Becca always make decisions that I agreed with? No, but I do think they were trying their best to be fair according to their own biases and opinions on the kind of forum they wanted Kboards to be.
The no-erotica in sigs rule was because of Google Ads. I remember at the time, the companies who were paying for their ads to be displayed were getting upset at being linked to/from things they disagreed with, and so Google Ads made changes to their TOS. It's the same reason YouTube is always demonetizing channels for saying bad words.
That Google Ad money, as well as money from Kboards ads was a big part of the problem. RH was paying for ads, I believe, which was why they didn't want to offend her. Also, they were scared of being sued, which I think they were, or were at least threatened with a suit. So, I think that's why they were so soft on RH and hard on Christina. It can be scary and hard to be put into a situation where you have to choose between money, liability, and being a safe place for everyone. Honestly, it's impossible to be a safe place for everyone. The mods tried that, and it just didn't work.
I started this board because I was annoyed with the censorship, but this experience has also given me a tiny bit of perspective on what their jobs were like as mods. So I feel a little warmer toward them now. The power hungry sentiments could also be true. I don't know. I think some of that probably is true. But moderating Kboards was not an easy job, and doing the job according to their policies almost demands developing a thick skin and maybe a bit of a god complex.
I dunno. I'm just glad we're small, and everyone here seems to be on the same page regarding rules and stuff. I don't have the personality or social skills to moderate a huge board like Kboards once was. I actually feel that being a mod there would be kind of a nightmare scenario.
I'll admit I read there mostly for the popcorn. I went there initially looking for companionship and info, but the drama soon overtook everything else, and it was what I lived for back before I became too busy working on TUOK.

Okay, I think this is the worst way kboards has changed. I just had to do two captcha's to sign in. That has never happened before. Thanks! I hate it. Maybe it was a sign. I ended up leaving and going to Facebook.

I went there initially looking for companionship and info, but the drama soon overtook everything else, and it was what I lived for back before I became too busy working on TUOK. The reason many have always criticized the mods at Kboards is because they aren't FAIR. That's the issue. They showed obvious favoritism to some while coming down hard and even banning others for the same exact things they let others slide with. I know what it's like to be a moderator. I have several groups on FB and I've also had Yahoo groups and were a mod for other forums years ago. No one expects a mod to be perfect but you need to be fair. You can't have rules and then let some people (because they are so-called famous or whatever) break them but then just act horrible with others. I respect your feelings toward Becca, but I remember many threads when she was straight nasty to posters. That's another way a mod should never be. You gotta keep your emotions out of it and Becca has called people "trolls", and all kinds of names through the years, the same things the members can't do. So, for me, that's the issue I have with Becca. I think the other mods were much more professional even though I had issues with them as well because of RH and other things through the years. But I've seen Becca get down in the dirt with members on Kboards through the years then throws her power around by banning people. Also, I think we all understand running a board like Kboards is hard but if it's too hard for a mod to do their job fairly without being a witch to people who disagree with their heavy-handed rules, then don't be a mod. A mod is a volunteer. Come to think of it, they used to always throw that up, "Well no one asks us to mod. It's a hard job." Exactly. So if it's that hard to where someone starts being a jerk to posters and can't keep their head then they shouldn't do it. Being a mod is like being in customer service. You gotta remain professional no matter what you get back. That's the hard part of being a mod. Don't lower yourself to someone you feel is being a jackass and that's what Becca did. I remember all the time she copped attitudes and got bitchy. She might seem milder these days but that's because no one is there. She doesn't have as many people to fuss with or wrangle as before. Again, being a mod is a volunteer and they signed up for that. No one made them become a mod at Kboards. No, they enjoyed it. You could tell with the power trips but then they would act the victim when members called them out on their hypocrisy. Also, many don't respect those mods because of how they treated the authors there. Like they say, respect is earned. You're not owed it just because you mod a board if you are treating others badly. I have nothing against those mods personally. I don't know them but there are many people who feel the same way I do about how they ran things and they were a BIG reason why many people left as well. Talking with my mod hat on, I'd never have done some of the things those mods did over there. And I never would disrespect a member and lower myself by name-calling the person, etc. I would deal with it professionally. Either talk with the poster, warn them or ban them if they don't stop. And if I felt it was too much to handle, I'd quit. But as a mod, I treat all my members in my groups with respect and something those Kboards mods always did that was out of line was blasting members ON THE BOARD for everyone to see. You don't do that. That's what PM is for but again it was like they got high on the power and throwing their weight around.

Again, for most, it seems the issue was their attitudes (at times) and the unfairness. A perfect example is how there was a rule of no author bashing. But did you notice how with folks like RH, David Gaughran or anyone they held in high esteem, if a poster said anything negative about them, then the thread would be closed ASAP? But I remember some threads where people were bashing authors (who weren't Kboards' golden children) and the threads stayed open for days, barely being pruned. I'm sure others know what I mean because that happened more than once. Some authors were getting dragged in posts for days and I'd be like, "Wait, this is still up?" I'd be so shocked it was still unlocked then the members would criticize the mods for not locking the thread because they lock other threads, and THEN the mods would lock the thread. Yet let someone say ONE bad thing even if it was warranted about Kboards' favorites like Hugh, Wayne Stinnett, David Gaughran, Chris Fox, Russell Blake, or JA Konrath, etc. and that thread would be locked within minutes.
Just blatant hypocrisy and they didn't even try to hide it. I'm not blaming the authors because it wasn't their fault if they got special treatment but it was obvious there were two tiers on Kboards: posters the mods felt were important and the ones they felt were not.
Anyway, I'm not going to stay on the mods because I don't want to seem like I am beating up on them but yeah, there were issues. I think we can all agree though that many of these issues started WAY before Vyderscope. That's all I'm trying to point out.

One of the reason I have read this board for years is because it's so open. It's refreshing and a relief to be away from the BS you find on pretty much every other forum. It's like being allowed to breathe.
And I don't know who Writeway is, but whoever they are, I can verify what they're saying is 100% true. I've seen it myself. A lot of us chat extensively behind the scenes by email. The mods drove away many good posters, some that I really missed once they were gone.
I'm not going to keep piling on about kboards because I've said what I had to say. But I will add that it would be a shame to take away the openness on this forum.
Tim at WS has his black lagoon rather than deleting or modifying posts. That's much better than what kboards was/is doing.

No worries tweek, I like the openness, too. The only time I ever edit anything is if it's a spammer or a scammer, or if we had a really bad troll. Everyone is always free to share their opinions, beliefs, and experiences here. And peeps can even disagree with each other, and it's no big deal. writeway, I believe you! I always respect your experiences and educated opinions on things. I personally don't really remember a lot of the stuff you do remember. But I can be really oblivious to stuff. I think part of that is being on the spectrum. A lot of the nuances of social interactions go right over my head. And I tend to miss stuff. That's why I'm really glad you're here to point out stuff that I didn't see! I agree that double standards are bad, and yes, moderating is a voluntary position. Whinging about how hard something is when you've chosen to do it is never a good look.
