I haven't read the post yet but I disagree that Also Boughts are as important as the once were. Amazon is slowly but surely doing away with Also Boughts in favor of Sponsored Ads. Before ads, Also Boughts were a good way to get visibility, now, not so much especially with how they disappear here and there and seem to be pushed so far down the pages that you can't see them. The row moves too. Sometimes Also Boughts are underneath the Sponsored Ads and some pages no longer have Also Boughts at all half the time.
Amazon is completely pay-to-play now but I no longer play that game. I gave up AMS and all click ads and glad I did. I use other things for visibility. I refuse to keep paying Amazon money. It's a racket.

Yeah, with all of the ads, I was of the same opinion that alsoboughts weren't really a thing anymore. But this DG article showed up on my FB feed as an ad, so I thought, "hmm, maybe they aren't dead quite yet?"
Amazon is most definitely very much pay to play though. I don't see how anyone makes money with AMS since your odds of showing up in a place where readers will actually see you, rather than on page 20 of search results seems rather low.
Did you read the Kboards thread where the guy was showing how much he'd spent and earned last year on amazon, and how he spent way more than he made? I felt sad for him, but a lot of people do that. And then one guy who writes sci-fi stuff, came in and said he doesn't spend anything on his books, so it's all profit, and he didn't understand the "spendaholic" mentality. Which of course didn't go over very well.
So far in my journey I have spent close to zero on my publishing efforts. This resulted in low sales, but at least everything I earned was mine, and I wasn't losing anything.
And then a couple of months ago, I got a stimulus check and wasted a whole bunch of money on courses and programs and things to try and make money with lcb. But I've uploaded 13 lcb's, which take like 15 days to be approved, and I sold one children's book, and my dad bought one of my word search books, and that's it. And I'm just super mad at all the money I lost. I don't want to spam amazon with hundreds or thousands of books that don't sell. At least with smut I always get a few sales and page reads with every book. So I am back to a firm, "never spend money on anything," vow.
