Anymore, tv shows and movies seem to be filled with lazy, illogical, and just plain bad writing. From Star Trek Picard to the Disney Wars Trilogy, it's sad and makes me feel kind of angry. Actions no longer have consequences, characters no longer require motivation, plot moments don't need to be set up, no one needs to earn anything, and continuity just gets in the way of the story. *These are all things I strongly disagree with, by the way*
What are some shows and movies that you feel has truly excellent writing, plotting, and directing?
WestWorld is pretty good, I think. I didn't like it at first because there was so much raping going on. And the female character is sexually assaulted which makes her stronger trope is annoying. However, I felt like they handled Dolores story pretty well. And Maeve, who is my favorite character, just rocks so hard. She is my number one badass queen!!! But I can't tell if I just like the show for the characters, or if the show is actually that good. Since I also really love Star Trek Discovery because I like the characters a lot, but the writing probably isn't that good.
The only movie I can think of that I know absolutely for damn sure is a good movie with good writing is Star Wars: A New Hope. I believe it is a perfect movie and is the one I rewatch the most. It's a very simple film. Simple plot. Easy to understand. The heroes journey plays out seamlessly. The characters all have heart and are memorable and unforgettable. You don't get a ton of details about A GFFA, but you get just enough to feel like you're in a real place that you'd love to visit. That film sparked the greatest six-film saga of all time, and it inspires me so much.
For TV shows, obviously Babylon 5 is number one for amazing, deep, planned out, logical writing and directing. It is my other great inspiration. There were a few story decisions I would have preferred happened otherwise, but the 5 year saga was sooooo good as it was. The amazing character transformations, the skilled foreshadowing, the actual thought that went into why character x was behaving this way and character acts actually having consequences. It was all so brilliantly crafted.
