The KDP dashboard has started providing helpful suggestions, one of which is that I should run a free promotion on my $9.99 bundle that is in KU. I've never had a ton of luck running those, but I've heard that when you're in KU you sometimes get page reads when peeps hit the wrong button. What have your experiences been with free promotions on bundles?

I would say a big fat YES if you are wide like me. Not sure free does anything if you are in KU. I always wondered why put a book free when it's already free in KU? Yes, you still get page reads if someone reads your KU book for free but other than that not sure it is worth it. With wide you can use free for so many benefits such as permafree which can really propel a series especially if you can get Bookbubs for your freebies. Freebooksy does well too but I move free books daily without promotion. When I really wanna boost a series I will run a paid promotion for the permafree but other than that, nope. Another advantage is free not only sends readers to other installments in the series but to other books in your backlist. Free is a way of promoting without having to lift a finger every second. Permafrees move copies for you in the background.
I've never done a free promotion on a bundle and WOULDN'T. NO way in hell am I giving away a bundle of books for free. I can't see any advantage to that. Giving away a free book that introduces a series, fine. But I see no point in doing freebies on a bundle or standalones but then again I am wide so if you are in KU you have the potential to get reads but I still wouldn't give a bundle away free.
I'd also ignore any suggestions KDP or Amazon provide because I am sure their "suggestions" benefit them way more than it does the author.

Yeah, I mean. I already feel like I am giving the book away for free. I do think perma free novel for first one in series is a good strategy, so long as you get good sell through. I've seen smut writers use this, too. They write smutty serials and always perma free the first. But I have yet to try that. It would be hard to permanently lose so many sales. But I probably would try it for TUOK. Maybe. If those serieses ever exist.

You do get page reads, and not because they hit the wrong button--KU readers often are used to managing their reading with their queue of 10, so they pop your book into the queue rather than get it free and possibly forget about it. When I got a free BookBub on my intro trilogy back in 2016 when I was in KU with it, I got a ton of page reads, and those borrows counted for paid ranking when the 5 days were up, so it definitely paid off. If I were doing it again, I'd totally do it in coordination with a BookBub or other strong promo.
