So far this forum is looking more like a blog in forum format, so I guess I'll continue to write blog posts, for the practice, and anyone is welcome to jump in and participate if they wish.
So I created my own fantasy world that I'll call TUOK here. A world can be as big or small as you want or need it to be. You could look at Earth and base your world off an alt version. Or you could find a real alien planet and base your world on it. Or you could make it up out of whole cloth. TUOK is a whole cloth world which operates quite differently from our world. Make your world as similar or different to Earth as you like.
On TUOK there are no sun, moon, or stars. The light rises up from the ground until it meets the ceiling in the sky, then it bounces and flows back down. The time it takes for it to rise fully up is called lightrise and is when people are awake, the bounce is the signal of the changing of time, and everyone sleeps during lightfall. During the bounce the light literally bounces all around, before the shadows change and it begins to fall. The light doesn't produce heat, heat comes from rocks, certain rocks are hotter than other. Wind and air come from trees. Rain rises up from the ocean. And snow is a magical curse that only falls in one area of the world.
For land divisions, I have the entire world divided up into islands, there are 2,012 islands in TUOK, and the entire ocean is like a very strange Bermuda Triangle. Ordinary mortals cannot get in a boat and sail away to another island, there is a natural navigation barrier around each island, and once that barrier is breached mortal sailors are lost forever. Which means that each Island has its own unique language and culture and the ordinary mortal is quite ignorant of what goes on at the other islands. If it weren't for the Navigators who are born with an inner compass which allows them to navigate the seas, no one would know anything about the world at all that did not occur on their own island.
The Navigators are a powerful and mysterious unorganized group that control all travel, trade, geography, and war in the world.
The people in my world are all humanoid, they are born with either lavender, silver, grey, or blue skin, certain islands tend toward one color more than others. Hair can be either straight or curly and can match their skin color or mismatch with a different color. Everyone has red blood like we do, and everything else about them works the same. Eye color usually matches hair color, but not always.
I decided to do it this way as a means of trying to move away from earth racial prejudices. I'm not sure if this is a good move or not. One thing I'm going to want to watch is that I don't want each TUOKian color to represent a real Earth race. So I don't want readers to say, "okay, so the blues are the white people, and the greys are the black people, etc. But of course every reader will bring their own prejudices with them into each story and I can't control how they read. All I can do is create the best characters, and the deepest cultures, and be as creative as I can.
