When creating your characters, or getting introduced to them, do you find yourself grudgingly liking or at least respecting them all, even the mean and nasty ones? Is it important for you to like your characters, or do you find not liking them easier since your stories tend to require tons of cannon fodder? When you read other people's stories, is it important for you to like their characters? Why or why not?
For me, I think it's more interesting for my characters to be interesting. If they bore me then I don't want to write their stories and they end up in character oblivion. When I read other people's books or watch their TV shows/movies, if the story is interesting, then I can live with boring characters, but usually I need to like at least one character for me to continue.

Hmm, I never really thought about it.
I do really like some of my “villains”. They’re just too fun to write about!
Some I like more than others I guess, but I don’t think I outright hate any of them.

I like most of them, I guess. I definitely like the protagonists, because I would find it difficult to spend much time with them, if I didn't like them. A not very likeable character is okay for the duration of a short story, but for a novella, novel or series, I need to like the main characters. I don't always understand why they do what they do, but I like them I don't always like the villains, since some of them are really horrible people (though as prolificwriter said, sometimes writing horrible people can be a lot of fun), but I always try to understand where they're coming from. And occasionally, a character who was supposed to be a villain surprises you and becomes something more.

No, I don't. If they were real people I wouldn't have anything to do with them. But, I love knowing I came up with all these different people (it helps knowing some real nasty folks over the years, I guess).
