When a print book on amazon says it's out of stock I think that means it wasn't printed by KDP or (Createspace, back in the day) but is fulfilled by someone else like Ingram Spark or D2D, now that they do paperback. I wonder if seeing that notice causes authors/publishers to lose sales?
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with this?

This is why expanded distribution is smart. If one store runs out of your print book customers can get it from another store. I always use expanded distribution because just because it's out of stock on Amazon doesn't mean it's not available elsewhere. But if you only have your print book in one store it most likely will cost a loss of sales because customers have nowhere else to go and whether or not they want the book bad enough to wait for more copies to be available, who knows?
Oh and if someone else like Ingram or D2D does your copies it won't matter if you don't have extended distribution. Being out of stock just means that particular store (Amazon or whoever) doesn't have the book no matter who printed it.
