Let's talk about characters. Do you think of your characters as real people whose stories you are privileged or burdened to share? Or are they your creations whom you mold and shape to use as you please? Do you use character tropes to make the process quicker, and then build onto your characters as the story progresses? Do you steal characters from your favorite stories written by other people? Do you base characters on people you know in real life? Do you do all of these things at different times and in different ways?
My goddess character began with a snippet that popped into my head: she awoke to the sound of a thousand voices crying her name. This fascinated me and I wanted to know more. I named her partially after my crush, and based some of her attributes on her. But over time Valevia became her own person. I can place her into timeline or plot setting and know immediately what she would do. She definitely doesn't seem like someone I created, but like a being who truly exists.
I have other characters that I definitely created for the purposes of a story, and I don't care much about them.
My favorite characters are always the ones who come to life and stop listening to me and what I want. They have their own lives, their own opinions and beliefs, and I can control them about as well as I can control anybody else.
What about you? What are your characters like? How do they come to be?

My muse makes them up, I guess. I don't normally sit down and think, "I need X kind of character for this story.", I just get an idea of who is in the story and some bits of the plot, and on we go. I'm often really surprised at who shows up.

I'm often really surprised at who shows up. Yeah, I'm definitely not that structured, either. I think it's more fun to be surprised. Sometimes I'll put out a casting call and then go on google images and look for people who speak to me and who suggest a character. Not that I usually write any of these stories, but I'll jot down the idea I got, anyway. But really, when I actually write, the words just take over and generally most of what I planned gets thrown out the window. Planning uses one monkey and writing uses another, I guess.
