I am not good at social media, at all. I don't keep up with things, and I get bored. I don't think any writer has to be on social media. If you hate it and don't even use it for personal use, then I don't think anyone should try to force you or shame you for not using it. But if you do use it, or you'd like to use it - here is a thread where we can talk about it.
I am on Facebook where I have more than one profile even though you're not supposed to have more than one. I have one with my real name, that I consider my fake fb, because I can't do anything fun with it. But it's there in case my real one with my KSennia Visitor name ever gets deleted I'll still have access.
I have an author page connected to my real name FB, but since I've pretty much given up publishing stuff under that name I haven't done anything with it and never really got anywhere with it. Didn't promote posts or anything. Then I have an Audra Black page connected to KSennia, which basically just links to my Audra author site, which is just posts of when I published new books. In other words it was half-assed and the very least I could do.
And then I've got my accountability group, also connected to Ksennia and to my real name, for just in case. Facebook groups have a lot of possibility, and it's easier to advertise and get more fans for free since FB sticks the groups that everyone is in on the sidebar of every group they're in, so that's free money, right there.
I'm also a member-admin of the cozy mystery group since the group admin had to give it up, so she made everyone in the group an admin. That was fun! Not everyone wanted to be an admin, so they were kinda pissed, but oh well.
I also made a smut writers workshop group but I couldn't get anyone to either join it or post in it.
I also had another facebook profile for an old pen name that doesn't have any published books under it anymore. Then I shut it down and made an author page, which may still be under my real name, not sure. It's confusing having so many accounts and names.
I also have twitter. I've got a Ksennia twitter, which I use occasionally. I also had a twitter for my email copywriting, back when I was trying to be an email copywriter. Getting followers and likes and retweets on twitter is pretty easy when you use the right hashtags, and if you tweet a lot. But trying to make money from twitter is a lot harder. But I hear some people do okay with it. If you actually tweet to your followers, reply to them, and post lots of fun meme things not related to self-promotion, you will do better.
On Ksennia I mostly just retweet stuff cos I have a communication disorder that makes trying to have conversations with people difficult. My brain just won't come up with things to say back, after, "Hiiiii." So I retweet, like, and post self-promo links. But because I don't actually have any real followers, nothing much happens. But I like going there for news and political stuff.
I have a couple tumblrs, but I really don't know how to use tumblr, so don't do anything with them. I've got a pinterest but don't know how to use that one, either. And I don't do photos, really, so instagram isn't my thing. I guess I like Facebook and Twitter the best.
I know Facebook is really bad with privacy stuff and selling us out for money, but Facebook is where made my first friends who weren't fellow brainwashed cult members, and it's the first place I was allowed to be myself. So I feel a ton of gratitude for it. And twitter is just fun when I am bored and have nothing better to do with my time.
Old-school forums are still my favorite, and they can be used for effective self-promo just like blogs can. So don't ever feel pigeon-holed into only one outlet. What are your favorite social media or non-social media ways to promote yourself and your books? What are your best tips?
