Two come to mind immediately. I love Diana Gabaldon, who wrote the Outlander series, and Cindy Brandner, an indie Canadian author, whose Exit Unicorns series is the only one which grabbed me the way Outlander did. Cindy is now working on the 5th book in the series, which is set mainly in Belfast, N. Ireland, in the midst of the "Troubles." Her characters are vivid and memorable, and the wait for each new book is excruciating.
