Chris Fox has an excellent video on YouTube on how to get beta readers. If you don't have time to watch it, what he says is that you need to sell the read. You have to work as hard at selling your book to peeps to read for free as you do to sell it to peeps for money. This may be obvious, or you might be like me and go, "ohhhh, that's what I've been doing wrong."
Chris was able to get 50 beta readers for one book by making sure he had his pro cover, his pro blurb, and a great tagline ready before he looked for betas. Then he put up a special page on his site for beta readers with the cover and blurb on his very cool looking website. At the end of the blurb he has a button you can click to either sign up to his beta reads list or to download the book. He didn't specify.
And then after getting those 50 betas to sign up voluntarily, albeit slowly. He went to reddit sci-fi boards and other places where he knew peeps who liked his kind of book hung out and he sold them on being his beta through his awesome title, blurb, and tagline.
So if you wants lots of beta readers who aren't your friends or family that is one way to go about it. Now for the video if you'd like to watch for yourself, and see how cool his website and beta reader signup page looks.
