What are your favorite type of aliens? Do you like them humanoid and relatable, or do you prefer them to be truly alien and nothing like us humans? What are your favorite examples from books or movies? Share aliens you have created, also, if you feel comfortable doing so. Be as vague or detailed as you like. My favorite aliens are the ones in Babylon 5 because they were treated like people, for the most part, and they had complex societies and religions, and because Delenn, Londo, and G'Kar were some of the best characters I have ever seen on television. Of course, I would have loved if the show could have delved much deeper into each races society, history, and religions, and if we could have spent more time on their homeworlds. But TV budget and schedule and all that. I did find it a teensy bit annoying that Londo spent so much time discussing human history and using human analogies. Don't you have any of your own? But I guess 90s TV audiences needed them to be more relatable. I do know that from reading forums many viewers checked out when the storylines focused more on the aliens than the humans. I also really like the aliens from the expanse because they are more believable and much more alien. Plus, fascinating and I can't wait for the next series. I tried reading the books, but I really hate Holden and couldn't stand spending so much time in his viewpoint. I prefer the farther away, more global view that the show gives us, versus the more limited single pov's we get in the books. It's why I can't read the GRRM books. I don't wanna be stuck inside the heads of characters I hate for half the book. Luckily I loved Katniss, even if she did annoy me occasionally, or I never would have made it through the Hunger games trilogy. Sometimes really close first person pov is really awesome and it can make the book way better than the movie/TV show. Other times it's an excruciating experience and I really don't like pain. So there ya go. You can talk about aliens, or books versus movies, or first person versus head-hopping. Enjoy!

I guess I prefer humanoid, but I also was used to the different alien species from growing up with Star Trek and Star Wars. I never did really get into Babylon 5.
For my writing, the one time that I remember writing about aliens, they were humanoid.
In books versus movies, I've always preferred the books, but the one time I preferred the movie was for The Princess Bride. I don't know why, but I hated the book. Also, I loved the movie version of Howl's Moving Castle, which made me get the book. I loved the book series, too, but they were so different from the movie.
Last but not least, I can write in 3rd, but I prefer 1st person, probably because a lot of the books I read growing up and loved, were in 1st. I used to write 1st person past, but lately, I've been writing in 1st person present. I know it's not every person's cup of tea, but it's instinctive at the moment.

I like the truly alien aliens, those with unusual mental processes, even if writing them is a chore. Reading them from a good author is always fascinating. There's a book called Aggressor Six that is all about trying to get inside the mind of an alien species via a sort of team of pofilers. There are some books I can't remember the authors where the protag is a human kid raised by spacefaring starfish. The aliens in Arrival and in Annihilation were very cool, and alien.

Londo and G'Kar were awesome. They were the stars of that show. And they got all the best dialog, too. Downright Shakespearean stuff.
My favorite aliens are probably the ones from the Lovecraft mythos. Truly alien aliens. Cthulhu ftagn!

I grok Spock. smirk
Whether humanoid or truly alien depends on the story. For TV and movies, stuff you have to do makeup for, it tends to be humanoid ones that stick around, due to budget. But with better special effects, I guess it could get really strange now. I just watched the better part of the Alien Nation marathon on El Rey, and I liked that the Newcomers had such a great culture. I do wish they could have been a little more "different" in looks, but I can see why they weren't.
