Some of you have probably seen this before (I guess it went viral a few years ago?) but I just came across it and thought I'd share. Essentially an author finds a review of his book online and decides to leave a comment...or two...or three. tidbits.com/2014/05/02/funbits-bears-in-boats-fighting-crime/Follow up...have any of you ever engaged with someone who left a bad review? Obviously it's a bad idea...but have you ever made that mistake? What happened?

Hahahaha that guy really needed an internal braking mechanism between his wounded pride and his fingers. Thanks for the link. I, for one, had not seen it before.
I really don't go around checking to see if I have reviews or not. And I don't send out arcs or anything like that. I focus on sales and that's about it.
I don't think that responding to reviews is always a bad idea. It depends on the situation. Most of the time readers don't want authors intruding on their reviews, but if the reviewer asked the author a question, or asked a question that you think might really be helpful if you answered, then maybe you might want to reply. But definitely not if it's a negative review.

I occasionally respond to negative reviews if I think the review was beyond the pale off-base. Not if they didn't like the story, but for example, if I wondered if they even read the correct book. This happened recently, where the reviewer claimed one of my sci-fi books, filled with aliens and spaceships and space battles, "wasn't science fiction". So I commented wondering if he had perhaps posted this review on the wrong book?

They probably won't, but at least the comment highlights the issue for anyone checking the reviews. It's the only 1-star, and completely unjustified IMO, but that's life in the biz.

I haven't responded to any of my bad reviews, but sometimes they make me either say "Ouch" or laugh.
