A facebook group has been set up to discuss creating a new substitute forum for Kboards. It's on Facebok just to be an easy place for people to talk about what they'd like to see, what they would be willing to pay, possibly, etc. If you think you'd like to contribute here is the url. The person hosting it knows a lot about webmastery stuff and I bet could come up with a more private and secure solution, if everyone is interested. I also think they're interested in keeping the same moderation style, but maybe a bit more relaxed. I'm all for extra forums for authors. The more the merrier! www.facebook.com/groups/281305096034401/

Nah, I've got to sign up to see what's going on, and I've got enough groups already.
I like this place. Folks should come here and grow this forum.

Well, I joined cos I was curious since he knows how to create private forums where you can create your own TOS. Of course FB's TOS is pretty bad, too, so I'm not sure how talking about it there is worse than talking about it here. But I'm on FB already. *shrugs* David Van dyke joined, too, and suggested we merge if everyone agreed to. I said, maybe, if they're willing to be as open and free as we are, but if their membership wants too many rules and junk, then no thanks. Plus, if people here wouldn't want it, either, then we wouldn't. I was just attracted to someone else doing the work to make a private place. Cos I don't have the tech skills for that. But I'm also cool with letting them be them and staying here and being us, as long as everyone is happy!

Okay, one thing I don't like coming from the new board discussions is having to have moderators watching the board 24/7 to make sure that nothing gets into the writing section that may need to be moved or pruned. Do ya really need 24/7 babysitters? Maybe you could, just I dunno, skip over posts that you don't want to read?
I like reading and learning about everything. I don't want or need someone else protecting me from having to read something that may upset me. I mean, sure, if someone is using homophobic slurs, saying that rape is okay, etc, then their posts deserve to get deleted, but just cos someone made a joke about the great orange pumpkin we need the cops to come in and restore order? Maybe we could simply discuss things like adults instead.

To be fair, if you have thousands of members you might need a few cops. IMDb was completely unmoderated and that place was a shithole. Although it was my shithole and I loved it. But still, once you get so huge that the trolls notice you, a certain amount of policing is inevitable. On FB they're optimistically hoping to have crowds the size that Kboards has now while I'm looking at it more from a "we have 150 people," do we really need more than a friendly crossing guard?

A bigger place might need more moderating, but they definitely don’t need the kind of modding done by the current mods. I saw someone on KBoards suggest that they’d only move if the mods moved over as well. And I was like Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo! They’re part of the problem!

Right now they're mostly talking about all the moderators they're going to need to monitor the forum, and how important it is that there be someone on for all the time zones. They want to have lots of sub boards, and lots of rules about what you can and can't post. I would go bananas. No, I am no treating you all like children and scolding you every time two of you have a disagreement or someone starts to drift off topic. Off topic derails sometimes makes the best threads! I actually quit reading over there today because it was annoying me. I like our forum. Informal. Simple. And free. But if you need babysitters there are plenty of places that will accommodate you. They did have an interesting idea about a dead zone where you shuffle off the posts that the mods don't like and that the members are whinging about, but you don't actually delete them. They're just off sulking in a dusty cobwebbed corner by themselves. If you must have a strict forum decorum then I'd rather than that pruning and deleting. And off topic boards are certainly better than, "NOOOOO, you can't say that on the internet!" I would rather be moved than obliterated. But still. Can't we all just chill and post naked? Or dressed in our Sunday best, if that feels more comfortable? For the record, I don't care what any of you are wearing. You all look adorable.

Yeah, I moderate a different forum and it is mind-boggling to me how much moderation some people expect. They send me messages complaining about the most tedious things, they want me to punish people for arcane infractions of non-rules, they come up with their own weird little cultural rules like "posts ending in two questions marks are redundant" and then freak out when I say I'm not enforcing that, they send me long messages demanding help on random subjects, send me long messages demanding I force others to help them on random subjects, ask for feedback and demand I fix it when they get none, or the feedback is negative, they want me to get involved in the forum's "problematic culture" around using semicolons, urge me to ban people who have never posted -- literally, like "my neighbor Jake is racist, ban him! He has no user account or anything, I mean just call him and tell him he's a jerk and ban him".
The more you get involved, the more they will demand you get involved. I've found by far the most effective thing to do is to just ignore all that. You get just as many complaints, but they become converted into "you're an absentee mod!" complaints, and no one expects absentee mods to respond to complaints. Trying to respond to complaints will only encourage more complaints until you inevitably fail, and then they'll all exodus away. Better to be an absentee mod from the beginning.

Do ya really need 24/7 babysitters? Yes. Bobby could move his knee over to my half of the back seat, or maybe even touch me, and O.M.G., can you say cooties? And if Cindy looks at me a little too long I will just die. DIE. Literally. And I know it isn't likely to happen, but someone could, theoretically, have a different opinion than me, and the world would just...it would...oh my, I've got to go run for the fainting couch. TTFN.

*teeheeeheeee* DD *Have fun reading captaincranky Dean Koontz is really good, I hear. gaylordfancypants I believe you! I've been a member of enough boards and have listened to enough peeps complaining and arguing with mods that I know what they're like. This is why I'm glad the new board is starting up and why I'm glad there will still be kboards and all the others out there. I don't want IAH to get too big. I want us to remain a small enclave of angry rebels who just want a place to come to rant and shoot the breeze. I really couldn't handle something huge and a board with an army of jackbooted moderators would make me weep. So I want everyone who needs the moderation to flock to the new board where they will be accommodated, and then us reasonable adult folks can stay here and do our own thing. And yes, I'm aware that this could lead to everyone abandoning me and IAH turning back into my personal blog. Whatever. I can't imprison anyone and force 'em to stay. I will try to be interesting and relevant and give folks a platform if they want it. But I'm not out to change the world or anything. And I'm certainly not out to police it.

I tried visiting the forum Timothy Ellis set up, but it just gives me a 404 error. I could have swore I got it to come up a few days ago, when there was nothing really there, but maybe I got it confused with something else.

He's been having server issues since last night and is working on it. Here is the url for when he gets it back online - writersanctum.com/index.php

Yeah, Tim's place will be back up eventually. Poor guy's been slaving away to get it going. Spending his own coin, too. I'm willing to be as patient as necessary.

Timothy just posted on Facebook that he thinks he got the problem sorted, except for Opera users, and for peeps to try again.

I used to used Opera, and a lot of sites just won't load on it, which is a shame, since it's a pretty fast and responsive browser. I loved it except for the whole part where it didn't play well with others.

DD I love Opera, too. I tend to use chrome most of the time because they have so much of my data saved. They've got my search history saved going all the way back to 2010 via MY Activity, so I like to use google to keep my archive going. Though sometimes I use duckduckgo to search when google thinks I'm a robot. Opera is more for emergencies, like when a couple of days ago chrome kept crashing every time I opened it. I think it was because it was trying to up date.
