Hi, I'm Vanessa Romeoara Deguilfloy Sethren. I live in town 212, on world 222, in starlaxy 43, in galaxy 6, Universe 8. Ghosts are pretty rare because when your body dies your soul and spirit are supposed to be automatically sucked out into the Immortal Realm. You're not supposed to stick around once the death council draws your name. But sometimes the entrance to the Immortal Realm may be blocked or closed. The one in town 212 suffered some sort of mega power outage the year I was born, and ever since then ghosts have terrorized the town.

One problem with trying to cohabitate with the dead is lack of space. My grandparents have all died since the entrance meltdown. Grandpa Job and Granna Luelin's house was sold after their funeral, and they haven't been able to get it back. The town council is quite firm that dead is dead and no one gets to hold on to their property once they vacate their body. So Grandpa Job devotes most of his time to breaking things inside the Rodger's house as his only form of protest. And Granna Luelin hides things from them. The Rodger's have had to replace their car keys twelve times after Granna won those rounds of hide & seek.
Grampy Tae-Wing and Granny Song-Bird owned and ran a tea shop. I've heard it was really lovely and quite popular, but Huntington Thurmand Solangiax Jr. decided to open up a donut shop in its place once they both passed. Granny Song-Bird thought this was a disgrace, so she spent most of her time ruining Huntington's batches until he lost all his customers and went bankrupt. The building space has lain bare ever since cos everyone is too scared of Granny to cross her. Grampy is actually much more sanguine about the whole thing. He doesn't like to cause trouble for the living, so he just sits out on the pier and watches people fish. Which a lot more people do now cos tourism has almost shut down thanks to all of the mischievous and sometimes downright malevolent spirits running around here.

You might be wondering, why don't people just move away if the conditions here are so terrible? Well, they can't because County 9's Commissioner has decreed that no one from town 212 is allowed to leave. I know some people left before the decree. I never met them, but Robinette and Martha Hollingsway left right after the meltdown and I guess a ghost followed them, which led to the border police that checked everyone for ghosts before they could exit. I'm sure this must have put tourists off, as well. Scary looking Rhinos with their perpetually angry glares, monster machine guns, and tough-as-nails-authoritarian bent won't put anyone in the party mood.
I guess a few of the Rhinos failed though cos some ghosts got out, and ever since it's been quarantine city. Not that I have ever been to a city. I've seen one on TV though! All those lights and the scary tall skyscrapers that people are always being thrown off of seem really fun. Maybe, one day, if we ever get the Immortal Realm door fixed I can actually visit one.

The Town Council has tried many times to get other towns to let us use their IRE's but none of them will. I think part of the problem is that normally it isn't voluntary, and so no one is quite sure how to shove the ghosts through when they're resisting. And none of the other towns want their streets being flooded with the moody, resistant dead, so they all said, no. And no one in the mortal realm knows how to fix the IRE. So we're basically stuck with them for now.
I don't really mind them, actually. My best friend got really sick with blue fever and died when she was 10. If the IRE was active I would have never seen her again. I do wish her parents wouldn't have been so mean to her though. They pretty much ignored her after she came back. I guess they were scared of her, and their church teaches a lot of really weird shit about demons & stuff, so that can't help. A lot of townspeople have become religious due to the event. I've always been grateful that my parents didn't follow suit. They let Pauleegh stay in my room with me, and I have since growing up adopted a few more orphan ghosts. Pauleegh is sadly, still a child, so that has been weird. But I try and take care of her as well as I can.
Phillipus was run over by his father's car when he was 4, and I guess it wasn't an accident, so Phillipus stays with me, too. And then Maggie overdosed on sleeping pills when she was 15, and she stays here, as well. Grampy and Granny pop in every once in a while, but Grandpa and Granna are way too obsessed in their feud with the Rodgers. I think they feel if they were to leave the house even once that would be admitting defeat. Of course Oscarlton and Hezekinah are just as bad with their refusal to leave. Not that they would have anywhere to go, if they did leave. Finding a house to rent or buy is pretty difficult anymore. Every residence is either occupied by the living or by the dead, and moving from one haunted space to another isn't much of a solution. Besides, my grandparents are tame compared to some of the spirits here.

The scariest spirit in town is Timm. No one knows very much about him. He wasn't a townsperson. He was a drifter who ended up suffering a heart attack in jail. He died right before the mysterious energy surge, while my mom was in labor with me. It's weird to think of someone dying right when I was being born. I've heard rumors say that Timm was halfway through the IRE when the surge hit causing him to be flung backwards into town. He landed on Mayor Russhell Rustleinton's car, something for which she still holds a grudge, even though she died last year. I have no idea what Timm saw halfway through that portal, but whatever it was made him angry and mean and dangerous. He has killed three people since his demise, and all of his victims came out just as mean and nasty as him. Luckily he's pretty easy to avoid as long as you stay out of the ally behind Old King Church and the Big and Tall store. I dunno why he lives down there, but lots of other ghosts like to congregate together. I guess it's their deadzone.
