I don't really like horror, yet I'm strangely drawn toward it. I prefer psychological horror to torture porn, and supernatural to serial killers. I'm not sure I can write it. Whenever I try I end up wanting the monsters to all live happily ever after. I'm more of a sci-fi/fantasy girl. But sometimes I want to go someplace really dark. I tend to have nightmares/scary dreams that really do freak me out, and I don't actually like being scared. Yet once the fear passes I find myself gravitating back toward that dark spot in my closet. So maybe I do like being scared, and I don't know it?
I don't actually scare that easily, either. I think the Exorcist is hysterical. I do love the moody priest guy. I liked the priest guy in Poltergeist: The Legacy, too. But Reagan and the head spinning and pea soup vomiting is just super funny and not at all scary.
Want to know what is scary? Child ghosts. Not all of them, but some of them EEEEK! There was one in the pilot episode of Poltergeist: The Legacy that was super creepy. The Orphanage, an excellent Spanish horror film, very scary. The kid in the gas mask in Doctor Who - creepy as heckleston-speckleston.
Although I adored the first 3 seasons of Ghost Whisperer and those ghosts weren't scary at all. I couldn't keep watching after the abomination that was season 4, so I don't know what the rest of the ghosts were like. But ghosts can be pretty scary when done right, or they can just be very sweet and sad.
But I do love ghosts and ghost stories, most of the time.
Oh, and I thought the first Blair Witch movie was really annoying and boring. The second one was objectively a bad movie, but I loved it, and thought it was super fun. I like witches, too! A haunted ghost witch? Could be really great or could be really stupid. Most horror movies are really badly written. Yet watching bad/stupid/annoying people die in horrible ways can be quite cathartic. Especially if I'm feeling really depressed/anxious/angry at the world, etc.
Years ago when I was going through a really frustrating period in life my IMDb signatures was - I like watching people die ... in horror movies. And so maybe that's the real reason why I like horror. It's so much that I like being scared as it's a good emotional release for me.
What about you?
