www.amazon.com/Hope-Never-Dies-Mystery-Mysteries-ebook/dp/B075HY5NPF/"Vice President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama team up in this high-stakes thriller that combines a mystery worthy of Watson and Holmes with the laugh-out-loud bromantic chemistry of Lethal Weapon’s Murtaugh and Riggs." This is published by Penguin / Random House! Honestly I think things like this need to either stop or else for fan fiction to stop being mocked altogether. Why is there such a huge double standard? Why is this "art" while other stuff (not written by artsy and "deep" white dudes) laughed to scorn? Yes I'm a bitter woman. It's not just this, there's a long line of "it's fine if men write it, it's just masturbatory and stupid if women write it" in the "No, this isn't fanfiction, it's deep and thought-provoking and ART!!!1" Honestly I'm just tired of it. (And I just found out you can like your own posts here. There'll be no stopping me now.)

*hugs* I don't know why there is a double standard, but there always seems to be one or fifty.

There is a lot more leeway with political figures because protecting political speech is the whole reason behind the first amendment. Political office holders I think are seen as being "owned" by the citizens. If something like this wasn't allowed, it would be a slippery slope when it comes to other political speech like editorial cartoons and stuff.

*hugs* I don't know why there is a double standard, but there always seems to be one or fifty. I read thrillers and romantic suspense, and a lot of times the plots, the action, the danger, are very similar. But because there is an actual romance instead of a casual hookup in the romantic suspense, it gets less respect than the thriller. I'm sure that has nothing to do with the fact that women are the primary authors of romantic suspense, though, right?

(And I just found out you can like your own posts here. There'll be no stopping me now.) WADR...It's parody, not high art. That's all this guy does - he did two parodies of fifty shades, FCOL. Actually, the prose style is quite good, giving Crazy Uncle Joe a world-weary hardboiled vibe. He also seems to acknowledge the connection between what he does and fan fiction by appearing in a fan fic anthology. Additionally, there are plenty of female writers. They're all over the place, while publishers are calling for still more - seriously, can't get enough of them - and they win all the Hugos and whatnot. And aren't most of the editors and agents female? Well they are on TV. And the reason fan fic is laughed at is because real writers are supposed to create their own characters/situations; it's kind of a thing. However, one of the few times where this is not held to is in parody. Weird Al comes to mind - a not entirely welcome occurrence. Although that grammar song to "Blurred Lines" was pretty funny. There are some double standards out there, but I don't think this is one of them.

I really don't give a shit if you think there are too many women already in publishing and they "win all the Hugos and whatnot." My venting thread does not welcome your mansplaining. This is NOT the only thing that makes me feel male writers are taken more seriously, whatever the genre, and no matter how serious or not. But I am not going to debate you about it. Start your own thread to talk about gender issues; you're not welcome in this one. I will not respond to you further.

I came across a review for this mystery while doing the weekly link round-up for the Indie Crime Scene and my reaction was very similar to the OP's, namely "Wait a minute, Random Penguin publishes real person fic now?" But I guess it falls under the parody exception.
Regarding the Hugo, it took 16 years for the first woman (Anne McCaffrey) to win a Hugo Award, so a few years of mainly women winning don't make much of a dent. And besides, some of the best SFF authors writing at the moment are women.

And by funny, I mean not.
Okay. We'll admit it. We want all the things. All of them. Deal.

I have to admit that the handwringing and the "What about the poor menz?" comments are both depressing and amusing. Especially since there are men on the Hugo shortlist and there were men on the Nebula shortlist. They just don't dominate like they used to.

Now doesn't that feel better?
