I hear there is hardly any money in erotica anymore at least on Amazon. The only authors I see writing it now claim to only sell well at Smashwords. Many have moved from the genre. It's telling to see a genre that put ebooks on the map, fall off the way it has. Sign of the times. If anyone asked my opinion about writing erotica I'd say write something else because retailers have made it so difficult to sell now. The funny thing is it's the taboo stuff that sells the best but you can't find anywhere to sell it! Especially now that Selena Kitt has closed up shop. If SW stops selling it, it will be the end. Guess erotica authors can sell direct but then they run into issues with places like Paypal and credit card companies who have policies against selling certain things.
Anyway, just thinking out loud. Erotica started the e-publishing boom and now I wonder if erotica will become obsolete.

It's gotten harder and harder to make any money in erotica. Short smut used to be a way to make pretty easy bucks, if you could write fast enough and hit the right kinks. Now most people I know are writing steamy romance (some of it still more erotica than romance), writing long, and making headway on that route.

There is still money in shorts. But not as much. Not as quick. Visibility is much harder. Plus most short erotica writers would rather write romance anyway. Or at least that’s the impression I got from reddit. Anymore erotic shorts are used as a stepping stone for newbies, to learn how to write and publish.
