As someone who is happy walking on the darkside, and the light side, simultaneously if I can position myself right, thee greatest thing about indie for me is freedom.
I had an idea for a book. It quickly turned into a trilogy. Then I needed a precursor to set it up, and then a wrap up. That made five. And when I came to plan it out, they multiplied again into five trilogies. Might not end that way, but it's how it's looking now.
And I've realised that it's only the existence of indie that gives me the freedom to do that. No trad will give me a deal for fifteen books. One maybe. Three probably. Fifteen never. The possibility might be mooted, with review clauses naturally. And they'd often be on my back checking delivery dates and deadlines. So that's really great!
I do know that too much artistic freedom can lead to a pile of poo. I'm hoping being two-hatted will protect me from that. And I know that it might not be fifteen, it might go back to five, three or one. But I'm free to make those decisions knowing that I can still publish at the end.
